What We Look for in a Business Plan

In addition to requiring a strong management team and a unique investment opportunity with a large market potential in the communications and information technology industries, we look for the following elements in a business plan:

  • The product or service you are developing
  • An overview of your management team and their resumes
  • A brief history of the company
  • An analysis of the market potential
  • A competitive analysis including how you plan to differentiate yourself and protect your competitive advantage
  • The value proposition to your customer
  • Your approach to sales and marketing
  • Evidence of a sustainable business model as documented by an overview of the financial model and projections including key assumptions
  • An indication of the amount of capital you intend to raise at this time

We will typically contact you within three weeks of receiving your plan. If you would like to confirm receipt of your plan, please email us at

Our Investment Process

Columbia Capital takes a hands-on approach that begins with the receipt of a business plan. If your business plan meets our investment criteria, we assign three investment team members to further analyze the opportunity. This approach allows us to quickly evaluate new plans and provide entrepreneurs with access to our investment team.

If our preliminary analysis indicates that the investment meets our investment objectives, we then invite the management team to present a summary of the business plan to our entire Columbia partnership. The investment team members assigned to evaluate the plan work closely with the management team in developing this presentation. We also network extensively with our industry contacts and other third parties during this portion of the process to validate the business plan.

Our Non Disclosure Policy

Like other venture capital firms Columbia Capital does not sign non-disclosure agreements. Our reputation depends on our professionalism and our ability to maintain the trust of the entrepreneurs with whom we work. You can expect our team to respect the absolute confidentiality of any business plan materials you send to us.
