Columbia Capital started in 1989 as a pioneering venture capital firm focused on the then-emerging wireless communications industry. We established the firm with the belief that wireless would be a ubiquitous technology with unparalleled opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors to establish market-defining companies for many years to come.
Columbia shaped a unique culture in those early years which remains with us to this day. This culture was defined by active, sector focused investing - in fact, many of our early successes were conceived and incubated within Columbia Capital. From its wireless roots, Columbia has grown into a premier venture franchise in the wireless, broadband, media, and enterprise sectors. We have invested in over 120 companies, many of which developed into industry leaders, including MetroPCS, Nextel Communications, Ocular Networks, Saville Systems, and XM Satellite Radio.
We are currently investing our fourth venture fund, which closed in 2005 with $560 million in commitments, bringing our total capital under management to $2 billion. With ten partners sharing a close working relationship and an average tenure at the firm of over a decade each, Columbia Capital is poised to continue to make a significant impact in our core markets and generate strong returns.
